Muzamil is proud of his work. Matching words and pictures, thinking about initial sounds and end sounds.
Writing and reading from this morning`s ESL session.
Choose a picture.
Tell the teacher a sentence.
Teacher writes the sentence down.
The child reads it.
Teacher cuts up the sentence and mixes up the word order for the child to put in the correct order.
Child or teacher repeats the sentence until the order is correct.
Child copies sentence into their writing book.
Child glues the cut up sentence into the group book.
Teacher asks the child more questions to get more sentences.
Child writes them in their book. ( I have word card for the child to look up most common words on).
Child illustrates the sentence rather than the teacher copying the photo.
(Things have to be true ie a blue balloon in there pic etc.)
Lots of scaffolding activities to get the language flowing.
Teacher asks for individual words to be pointed out. Reliance on the initial letter or familiar words etc.
Child reads text into the camera.
Child hears the playback and can repeat if feels they can do better.

We share the finished product.

Simon followed instructions on how to make a rabbit. He also takes great care to draw his rabbit accurately. He puts thought into his words to describe it.

YEAR 1 The children listened to instructions and made a rabbit each.
They used descriptive language to describe the size, shape and colours of the body parts.
These middle and senior students are
learning to be more descriptive
with their words when
writing.

Year 1 students are checking they can recognise initial letters and their sound at the beginning of words
Here they played "Initial Letter Dominoes."

There are two different words at each end of a card. These name the two objects drawn on the card.
The aim of the game is to join the card that start with the same initial letter together.
Each time you join one end of the card the other end will have a new word for the students to look for.
This Year 1, group managed to make 59 dominoes match up.
That is amazing!

Victoria Avenue School in Auckland is currently celebrating Chinese New Year across its Year Levels from Year 2 to Year 6.
Liu Laoshi endeavoured to provide VAS children with multiple opportunities to participate in Chinese cultural activities, such as The Dragon Dance, The Red Handkerchief Dance and The Tangyuan-Making Workshop.
Year 5s and 6s, found themselves having a lot of fun and good laughs while they tried to dance the 7-metre-long ‘dragon’ across the school basketball court. These groups of children also attended the Tangyuan-Making Workshop run by Liu Laoshi just outside their classrooms.
Year 2s had a lot of fun trying out the Chinese drums and gongs, while Year 3s enjoyed doing the Red-Handkerchief Dance with Liu Laoshi and Yu Laoshi-VAS Mandarin Assistant for 2018.
The Tangyuan-Making workshop has provided them with an opportunity to know the origins of the Lantern Festival and the cultural implication of Tangyuan Making.
Students were encouraged to make Tangyuan- a round-shaped gluten rice dough from scratch.
They also enjoyed watching the cooking and the way Liu Laoshi dished up the Tangyuan. They were told not to eat their own Tangyuan until after lunchtime because Tangyuan can stay hot for a relatively long time after it has been cooked.
